The mistakes students make in real estate interviews
Even the brightest students make basic errors in real estate interviews, and interviews are hard to come by.
By the CRE Modelling team
Most students don’t realise that they are walking into a gun fight with a knife. In our experience, a decent student gets somewhere between 3 and 10 real estate interviews while at university, so each one has to count.
The top mistakes
- Not knowing your technicals: valuations and financial modelling are now table stakes to get a job in real estate.
- Lack of preparation: research the firm and current financial events.
- Weakness questions are deal breakers: don’t fake it, but avoid weaknesses that directly impact the role.
What the good interviews have in common
- Targeted responses: highlight relevant skills and experience.
- A personal connection: bring out a commonality with the interviewer.
- Dress to impress: first impressions count, and in real estate no dress is too formal.
- Confidence: show your enthusiasm for the industry and your drive to succeed.
